What is acne?
For most, acne is an inherited condition of the skin in which the skin cells inside pores shed faster than can be expelled leading to clogged pores. Normal pores shed about one layer of skin cells a day. Acne prone skin can shed up to five times that amount. The build up of dead skin cells, called “hyperkeratosis” leads to plugs within the pore or “microcomedones.” Clogged pores create the perfect anaerobic environment for the P.Acnes bacteria. This bacteria feeds on the oil from your skin and proliferates. It’s important to note that OIL is not the cause of acne; it’s just one thing that contributes to the problem.
Because acne is a DEAD SKIN CELL PROBLEM and starts with the formation of microcomedones deep inside pores, it is crucial to use products that are able to penetrate the pores to kill bacteria and expel excess dead cells. Our acne products do just that!
What should I expect at my first Acne Treatment and Consultation?
Our acne specialist will diagnose your specific acne type (inflamed, non-inflamed, hormonal) and identify factors that may be causing your acne. You will receive a packet with valuable information about ingredients, food, habits and lifestyle choices that aggravate acne as well as a list of acne-safe make-up recommendations. You will be asked to bring all of the products you use to your first appointment so that we can check for pore-clogging ingredients. After a thorough skin analysis, we will perform extractions and do a light treatment peel to kick-start the clearing process. We will design a customized home-care routine using products with “acne safe” ingredients and set up a treatment schedule that fits your budget.
How long does it take to get clear skin?
While many clients see an improvement in their skin within the first month, it usually takes about 4-6 treatments over a 3-4 month period of time to get at least 90% clear. This is because it takes 30-90 days for existing acne impactions to make their way to the surface to be extracted. We will recommend some key products to help flush out your pores and keep them from filling back up. For some people it might take 6 months to get clear depending on the severity of your acne.
How often should I come in for Acne Treatment?
In order to get clear as fast as possible, we recommend coming in for acne treatment every 2 weeks for 12 weeks until your skin condition is stable. or during the first few months. The purpose of treatment is to accelerate exfoliation, extract acne plugs as they surface, hydrate the skin and assess your home care routine.
Why do you adjust home care routine every two-four weeks?
Acne skin has the ability to adapt to products. We want to strengthen your homecare routine every few weeks to stay ahead of your skin’s ability to adapt and keep pushing your skin to get clear. If you are unable to come in that often, we’ll still get you clear, it will just take longer.
Does acne treatment work?
Yes! The Face Reality Acne Treatment Program has a 90% success rate. Sounds gimmicky, right? But their protocols and treatment plans have been tested and refined over the years. They have been treating clients at their acne clinic in California since the early 1990s with many happy and clear-faced customers. Now they train estheticians all over the country in their methods to spread the love!
What is the key to clear skin?
Your diligence using the right acne-safe products and getting regular professional acne treatments with extractions is the key to clear skin!
How is your acne treatment program different?
Can you get rid of acne scars?
What most people consider acne “scars” are actually red, purple or brown marks left behind by old acne lesions. These are not true acne scars. This is called Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) and can be treated at our clinic with a series of light chemical peels and the right home-care products to lighten these marks. True acne scars are deeper and may look like an indentation or pitting. These will need to be treated by a dermatologist.
Why do I need professional products for my acne?
Many acne products you find at the drugstore that claim to be good for acne actually contain pore-clogging ingredients or simply stop working (if they help at all). Face Reality’s products are specifically formulated for acneic skin and are guaranteed not to clog pores. The products contain pharmaceutical grade ingredients that clear current acne and prevent pores from filling up again.
Will antibiotics clear my acne?
Unfortunately, it’s a growing trend for doctors to prescribe antibiotics or Accutane to patients without providing alterative options or addressing the root causes of acne. Antibiotics tend to work for a time on some inflamed acne, but only deals with the bacteria associated with acne, not the main issue of excess skin cells. Therefore, once you stop taking the antibiotic, your acne will come right back. It is also not safe to take antibiotics long-term.
What about Accutane for acne?
Accutane is a very powerful drug with dangerous side effects that can last long after you have stopped taking the drug. It dries you out from the inside and can leave you with permanently dry, sensitive skin. Additional side effects include possible birth defects, depression, psychosis, Crohn’s disease, internal organ damage, muscle and bone loss, central nervous system damage and immune system disorders – to name a few. Often, acne returns after stopping Accutane and multiple rounds are required. If you are considering going on Accutane, please consult an acne specialist and consider your options first!

Acne Products
Face Reality’s skincare line of acne products has been specially formulated and fine tuned to be the most effective home-care products to treat acne. It’s not a “one size-fits-all” system like many acne lines. We will test your skin to determine your sensitivity level and recommend strengths of products that will push your skin to clear without excessive dryness or irritation.
Our acne products utilize the most effective, proven acne-fighting ingredients such as Benzoyl Peroxide, Vitamin A and Mandelic Acid. These ingredients are able treat acne by doing the following:
We ask that you stop using any prescriptions when you begin our treatment program. If you are currently using Retin-A or any other prescription topical creams, we recommend you stop using it two weeks before your first treatment so that your skin will be less sensitive and your extractions will be more tolerable. Also, we want to be able to accurately test your skin sensitivity for the strength of products we will recommend you start with. We will use the strongest products your skin can tolerate without irritation. As your skin adapts every few weeks, we will increase the frequency of use or the product strength to push your skin to clear faster. It is important that you follow home-care instructions and contact us if your skin begins to get too dry.
Taking care of your skin at home, along with regular treatments is the KEY to clearing acne.
Q: How many treatment should I do?
A: The number of treatments necessary will range greatly depending on what we are treating. On average, for light anti-aging treatments, 1-2 treatments may be sufficient. For deeper wrinkles and acne scarring, 4-5 treatments may be required to achieve desired results. There is no limit to the number of treatments that one can receive as long as adequate time passes in-between each treatment. And as always, maintaining your investment with maintenance sessions is highly recommended. Your aesthetician will guide you on a treatment plan for your specific needs.
Q: How long should I wait in between treatments?
A: Depending on the depth of the needle length used in your specific treatment, you may need anywhere from 1-4 weeks in-between sessions.
Q: What will this improve the appearance of?
A: Fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, [non-raised] keloid scarring, stretch marks, hair loss, and rosacea are all conditions that microneedling can improve.
Q: How long is the down time?
A: Wait a minimum of 90 minutes before applying anything else to this skin apart from what your esthetician applies. This includes sunscreen, makeup, moisturizer, etc. It typically takes 24-72 hours for all redness and pinprick scabbing to disappear.
Q: How will my face look immediately following a treatment?
A: There is a very wide range of normal reactions. Anything from little to no reaction, to a deep red flush, to pinpoint bleeding is normal. You may experience discomfort at the treatment site with transient redness and swelling which may last up to two hours or longer. The redness may last up to 2-3 days. The treated area may feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment. As this is a non-ablative procedure, more extreme reactions do not necessarily correspond to more extreme results. Infection is possible if proper aftercare guidelines are not followed.
Q: How long before I can expect to see results?
A: As soon as 1-2 weeks in some cases. 2-3 treatments for more extreme results. For hair regrowth it can take up to a month.
Q: Are there any contraindications?
A: Anyone with a condition that seriously impairs their immune system (such as cancer patients that are undergoing chemotherapy)
-Pregnancy
-Diabetes (due to problems with healing)
-Patients on Accutane (or any related acne medication should be discontinued for a minimum of 6 months prior to undergoing MicroNeedling.)
-Active Herpes Simplex in the treatment area (treatment is possible once the outbreak has healed, however it may be advisable to take prescription strength antiviral medication to keep this condition in remission during treatment series.)
-Dry skin (if your skin is overly dry, you will need to start a moisturizing regimen and ensure the condition is under control prior to undergoing MicroNeedling treatment.)
-Any active inflammatory skin condition (such as eczema, psoriasis, infection, rash or any type of dermatitis at the treatment site – it may further aggravate the condition)
Q: What should I do before my treatment?
A: It is best to stop the use of retinoids at least a day before treatment.
Q: Can I combine this with other treatments?
A: Typically combining treatments will result in more aggressive treatments and longer downtimes but can yield impressive results. Some treatments such as a light microdermabrasion or light chemical peel can be performed right before microneedling as long as the face is then cleaned before starting the microneedling treatment. This cannot be combined with procedures that involve the use of any topical solutions immediately following the microneedling. LED Light therapy is the only treatment highly recommended post-needling.
Q: Do I have to use the microneedling solution/aftercare serums?
A: YES! Microneedling stimulates keratinocytes in the skin to release growth factors that induce collagenesis. As you get older, these keratinocytes become less and less effective at this so the treatment on its own becomes less and less effective. Because of this the microneedling solutions become more and more imperative as a client progresses in age. Using the aftercare serums as well will cause the skin to continue producing growth factors even while in between treatments. Think of diet and exercise – microneedling without serums is like exercising without dieting. Results will be good with microneedling only, great with serums.
***LED Light Therapy is highly recommended to help boost more collagen $40/area
***after care serums are highly recommended for home care to see and achieve great results.
